FAQ

  • The short answer is yes.

If you live in the Cedar-Grove Belgium School District, you can play sports for the CGB Rockets as normal.

If you are joining Rocket Academy via open enrollment into the district and are not a school district resident, you can play sports for CGB but you can not compete at the varsity level for one calendar year after your first day of attendance. You can compete at the JV level in year one and then varsity level in year two. Please contact CGBSD Activities Director, Jake Maechtle, if you have more specific questions at jmaechtle @ cgbrockets.com

  • The short answer is yes.

School lunch is an option if you want it. Free and reduced lunches are also available if you qualify. You are also allowed to bring your own lunch. Lunch times do vary per day though:

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday approximately 12:15-12:45

Tuesday 10:45-11:15 - lunch is optional this day. Students can leave at 10:45.

Thursday - There is no lunch at school. Students are at their Youth Apprenticeship placements all day and will need to provide their own lunch.

  • YA is a state-sponsored program that gives high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore their chosen career path in a 1:1 mentor relationship at a partner business. Apprentices are paid for their work hours, receive on-the-job training, and complete coursework related to their career interests. Rocket Academy requires that each student participate in YA and provides ample school time to meet the 450-hour requirement.

  • Courses are taught by certified high school teachers using Lakeshore Technical College’s curriculum.

  • Rocket Academy employs one director/lead teacher that will be involved in all aspects of instruction.

Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) will provide an instructor for the dual credit content delivery on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Youth Apprenticeship coordination will be a contracted service via CESA 6.

  • Rocket Academy will meet at Cedar Grove-Belgium High School (CGBHS) on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Mondays & Fridays we will meet at 7:10 AM and a school employee will drive the students to LTC for lab time and learning opportunities. We will then return to CGBHS for lunch and then have an hour of class before dismissal to your Youth Apprenticeship.

Tuesdays we will start class at 7:44 at CGBHS. Some days we will stay at the HS and others we may go on field trips. At 10:45, students can either eat lunch at school or be dismissed. Afternoons are for YA Placement.

Wednesdays we will hold classes at CGBHS from 7:44-1:45, with lunch at 12:12-12:42. Students will then be dismissed for their YA.

Thursdays students will report directly to and work all day at the Youth Apprenticeship (YA). Thursday hours may vary per each student’s YA agreement but should equate to 7.5 hours.

  • To CGBHS and YA - families are responsible for getting their students to/from school and their YA location.

To LTC - Rocket Academy will transport students from CGBHS to and from LTC in a van or bus unless other arrangements are approved by the CGBSD Administration beforehand.

  • Since it's a school for 11th and 12th graders, students should already have most of their required credits completed. The Rocket Academy’s Governing Board has approved certain dual credit courses that will count toward required English/Language Arts (4 credits), math (3), physical education (1.5), science (3), and social studies credits(3).

  • Pathways align education and training with the needs of the local job market, provide a range of postsecondary options, result in a high school diploma with at least one industry-recognized credential, and help students enter or advance within an occupation. You can learn more by visiting our Career Pathways page.

  • The short answer is yes.

Rocket Academy will make every effort to foster your love of musical performance and accommodate enrollment into these programs at CGBHS. However, there is a tradeoff. When you miss Rocket Academy courses for band or choir you will lose valuable lab or youth apprenticeship time that you might need to make up somewhere else in order to complete your credits. It might also affect transportation to and from LTC or field trips which will need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  • Precision Machining - Introduces the learner to tools, measurements, and prints used in the machining industry as well as hands-on use and application of these concepts to the operation of manual and CNC lathes and mills.

Industrial Welding - Learn welding and fabrication through the use of the three major electrical welding processes: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Learners will weld in all positions preparing you for a career in many fields of work, including manufacturing, shipbuilding, custom fabrication, and pipe welding.

Building Trades Fundamentals with a focus on Heating and Cooling - A great first step for an entry-level position in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) fields. This training prepares individuals to install residential and light commercial HVACR systems used for the environmental control of buildings and product processes.

1-year Technical Certificate versus a 2-year Technical Diploma?

A certificate program typically includes classes that relate directly to the career. A degree program usually includes a variety of classes, also with a focus on theory and research, as the goal is to prepare students to become an expert in their fields.
